Fadl Kato

Fadl Kato suits couples and adult travellers on a budget who want a river-view room on the side of Elephantine that faces town. It does not suit families with small children, because from age 3 children pay the adult rate.

Why stay here

  • On the side that faces townFadl Kato sits on the east side of Elephantine, looking across the channel to the Corniche. That makes it one of the closest of the island guest houses to the east bank: about 0.8 km to the Nubian Museum and 2.0 km to the railway station, both in a straight line.
  • River views you can bookTwo of its five room types are sold as river view: a double and a studio. On an island where most rooms look onto village lanes, booking the view by name is the simplest way to get it.
  • Set up for longer staysThe hotel lists a kitchenette, a balcony and a washing machine in the units. The washing machine is unusual at this price, and handy halfway through a long Egypt trip.
  • Strong scores, a host guests rateIt scores 9.4 on Booking.com from 291 reviews (checked 11 Oct 2026), with staff at 9.7 and value for money at 9.5. On Google Maps it has 4.9 from 64 reviews.

Good to know before you book

  • Children pay as adults from 3This is the policy most likely to surprise families: from age 3, a child is charged the adult rate. For a family of four with young children, compare the total with ABU, which has a quadruple room, before you book.
  • Facilities score lowestFacilities is its weakest sub-score at 9.0, the same as Wi-Fi. There is a terrace and a restaurant, but no pool, garden or lift listed.
  • Ferry, then taxiThere is no bridge. To reach the east bank you take the public ferry from the island, which runs often in daytime and costs a few Egyptian pounds in cash, and then walk or take a taxi.
  • Not the top score on the islandAt 9.4 it is good, but two neighbours score higher: ABU (9.8) and Kashta (9.7). It costs a little more than ABU, at around €31 a night for two in mid-January 2027 when we checked.

Rooms

Couples have three choices: the double with private bathroom, the double with river view, and the studio with river view, a self-contained unit that makes sense for a stay of four nights or more. If the view matters, book one of the two river-view types; the plain double does not promise one.

For three, there is a classic triple, and for families the standard family room. Remember that children from age 3 count as adults on price, so a family room here is priced like a room for adults. Breakfast is continental and there is a restaurant on site.

Getting there and around

From Aswan airport

The airport is about 15 km away in a straight line. A taxi to the Corniche usually takes roughly half an hour; from there cross on the public ferry. Ask the guest house in advance if you want someone to meet you.

From Aswan railway station

The station is about 2.0 km away in a straight line, one of the shortest distances of the island places. Head south along the Corniche to the ferry landing on foot or by taxi and cross.

To the sights

The Nubian Museum (0.8 km) and the Unfinished Obelisk (1.3 km) are on the east bank: ferry, then a short taxi. Philae (6.8 km) and the High Dam (13 km) need a car or a tour. The ruins of ancient Abu and the Temple of Khnum are on the island, within walking distance.

How it compares
