• Away from the crowds of Nazlet el-SammanThe guest house is in Hadayek Al Ahram, a residential district on the desert edge, away from the busiest streets around the Sphinx. The hotel says the new main entrance to the plateau is roughly a 25-minute walk.
• A rooftop and a steam roomThe hotel lists a rooftop terrace with a view of the three pyramids, a steam room and a continental breakfast. Every room has a balcony, and there is free parking if you arrive by car.

Good to know before you book

• A one-hour check-in windowCheck-in is listed only from 12:00 to 13:00, and check-out from 11:00 to 12:00. This is the policy most likely to cause trouble: if your flight lands at night, agree a late arrival with the hosts before you book, or use their paid airport transfer.
• Further from the sightsLocation is its weakest score at 8.7. The listing puts it about 4.8 km from the pyramids and about 4.4 km from the Grand Egyptian Museum, so you will take taxis or ride-hailing cars for most sightseeing, and there are fewer places to eat nearby than in Nazlet el-Samman.
• Fewer reviews, and a similar nameWith 110 reviews, the score rests on fewer stays than the inns of Nazlet el-Samman, which have from nearly 800 to over 1,000. Rooms

There are only two room types, both with a balcony. The double comes with either one double bed or two single beds; say which you want when you book, as the choice depends on availability. The single with balcony is a good option for solo travellers who do not want to pay for a double.

With no family rooms, cots or extra beds, a family of three or more needs two rooms. In that case Sidi Hamad, whose rooms all sleep three or more, is the better fit. Breakfast is continental and room service is listed.

Getting there and around

From Cairo International Airport

The airport is on the far side of the city, roughly 40 km away or more. By car, plan on about 45 minutes off-peak and 90 minutes or more at rush hour. Because of the short check-in window, the hosts' paid transfer is the safest option. See Cairo airport to your hotel.

From Sphinx International Airport

Sphinx airport is on the desert road on the western side of Giza, usually a shorter drive than from Cairo International. Arrange the transfer in advance and tell the hosts your landing time.

To the sights

The hotel says the new main entrance to the plateau, the visitor centre on the Cairo–Fayoum road, is roughly a 25-minute walk; a taxi is quicker. The Grand Egyptian Museum is about 4.4 km away by the listing, a short drive. Downtown is a long ride, often an hour or more. See visiting the Pyramids of Giza.
