Best time to visit the Grand Canyon South Rim: month by month

The South Rim is open all year, but each month brings a different mix of heat, snow, storms and crowds. Here is what to expect month by month, from quiet snowy winters to the summer monsoon, with the park's own climate and visitor figures.

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is open every day of the year, so the question is not whether you can go but what each month gives you: heat or snow, full car parks or empty viewpoints, high or low hotel prices. This guide goes through the year using the National Park Service's climate averages and visitor counts.

Temperatures are the park's long-term averages for the South Rim, at around 7,000 ft (2,100 m), and for Phantom Ranch, about 4,500 ft (1,400 m) lower. Hours, seasons and prices are as of October 2026 and can change: check the park's weather and road conditions page before you travel.

The short answer

  • Best balance of weather and crowds: late September, October, April and early May.
  • Fewest people and lowest prices: December to February, if you are ready for cold nights and possible snow.
  • Busiest: late spring and summer. In 2025, May was the park's busiest month, with about 509,000 visits.
  • Hardest month for hiking below the rim: July, when Phantom Ranch averages a high of 106 °F (41 °C).
  • Storm season: the Arizona monsoon runs officially from 15 June to 30 September, and at the Grand Canyon thunderstorms are most frequent in July, August and early September, mostly between 11 am and 6 pm.

Sources: National Park Service climate averages; 2025 visits from the NPS figures compiled by Northern Arizona University; sunrise and sunset for the 15th of each month in 2026, our own calculation for Grand Canyon Village, checked against sunrise-sunset.org. Arizona does not use daylight saving time, so the clock stays on Mountain Standard Time all year.

2025 was not a typical year: visits fell to about 4.4 million from more than 4.9 million in 2024, partly because the Dragon Bravo fire closed the North Rim from July. The shape of the year still holds.

Winter: December to February

These are the quietest months. January and February saw fewer than half the visitors of May in 2025, and Kayak's figures for Tusayan hotels, checked in October 2026, put February as the cheapest month, at around $138 a night. Park lodges also cut their rates in winter.

The trade-off is cold. Rim highs average in the 40s °F (5–7 °C) and nights drop to the teens (around −8 °C). The South Rim gets about 58 in (1.5 m) of snow a year on average, and after a storm the park may close roads for a while to clear them. Carry a winter kit in the car, as the park suggests, and expect ice on the Rim Trail and the upper South Kaibab Trail.

From 1 December to the end of February, Hermit Road is open to private cars, weather permitting, and there is no Hermit Road shuttle.

Sunrise is late (around 7:30 am) and sunset early (around 5:15 pm), which makes both easy to catch even if you sleep in Williams or Flagstaff. Late November and December are the exception to the low prices in Williams: the Polar Express Christmas trains run from 6 November 2026 to early January 2027, according to the Grand Canyon Railway, and fill much of the town.

Spring: March to May

March is when the season starts. On 1 March Hermit Road closes to private cars and the red shuttle takes over, and visits jump: in 2025 the park had about 350,000 visits in March against about 207,000 in February. Spring break brings families and students; the car parks around the Grand Canyon Visitor Center often fill by about 10 am on busy days.

April and May are the best months for hiking below the rim if you want warm but not extreme days. Phantom Ranch averages 82 °F (28 °C) in April and 92 °F (33 °C) in May, and the rim stays mild. Spring is also windy and dry. Snow on the rim is still possible in March and April, and the park records snow as late as mid-June.

Priceline's figures for Williams, checked in October 2026, show April as one of the dearest months there, so book ahead for Easter and May weekends.

Summer: June to August

Summer is warm on the rim, with highs in the low 80s °F (27–29 °C), and very hot in the canyon: Phantom Ranch averages 101 °F (38 °C) in June and 106 °F (41 °C) in July. The park advises against trying to hike to the river and back in one day, especially from May to September. If you hike, go early and turn around at a sensible point; for the South Kaibab Trail, the park suggests Cedar Ridge as the summer turnaround.

The monsoon. From July, moist air from the south brings almost daily afternoon thunderstorms. Mornings usually start clear, clouds build by midday, and storms are most common between 11 am and 6 pm. Lightning is the main danger on an exposed rim: the National Weather Service notes that it can strike far from the rain, so move to a building or a hard-topped vehicle when you hear thunder. The park also suspends the Hermit Road shuttle during storms. Plan rim walks and hikes for the morning and keep the afternoon flexible.

June is the driest month on the rim and brings the longest days, with sunrise around 5:10 am. The Grand Canyon Star Party, a free week of telescope viewing behind the visitor centre, ran from 6 to 13 June in 2026 and is held every June.

Autumn: September to November

Visitor numbers drop after early September, the monsoon usually fades by mid-month, and the air dries. For many travellers this is the best season, with rim highs of 76 °F (24 °C) in September and 65 °F (18 °C) in October, and comfortable hiking temperatures in the canyon from October.

October is not cheap, though. Kayak's data puts it as the most expensive month in Tusayan, at around $445 a night as of October 2026. From about mid-October, nights on the rim drop below freezing, and the first snow can fall in November.

November 2026 and Route 66. US 66 was created on 11 November 1926, so the road turns 100 on 11 November 2026. Explore Kingman lists the Route 66 UltraRun between Seligman, Kingman and Topock on 13–16 November 2026. Expect busier motels along the old road around those dates. If you are combining the canyon with the road, see our Route 66 road trip from Kingman to Holbrook. 11 November is also a fee-free day at the park, but in 2026 fee-free days apply only to US citizens and residents.

The North Rim is a different calendar

The North Rim is higher, colder and open only part of the year. As of 15 October 2026 the National Park Service lists it as open until 30 November 2026 or the first major snowstorm, with no lodging inside the park after the Dragon Bravo fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge in 2025. For most visitors in 2026, the South Rim is the Grand Canyon.

Practical timing tips

  • Arrive before 10 am in busy months to park near the visitor centre, or park in the village lots and use the free shuttles.
  • Sunrise and sunset are the busiest moments at Mather Point and Hopi Point. In summer, the orange Kaibab Rim shuttle starts at 6 am and the Hermit Road shuttle runs until an hour after sunset, as of the autumn 2026 schedule.
  • Fees: non-US residents aged 16 and over pay $100 each on top of the entrance fee in 2026, unless they hold an annual pass. See Grand Canyon entrance fees in 2026.

Once you have picked the month, plan the day itself with our guide to the Grand Canyon in one day, and see the South Rim viewpoints for where to watch sunrise and sunset.

Where to stay, by season

  • Summer and October: book early wherever you stay. If sunrise or sunset is the point of the trip, Tusayan, at the South Entrance, saves you the drive in the dark.
  • Winter: Tusayan is at its cheapest, and the short days make Williams or Flagstaff easy bases too.
  • Late November and December: avoid Williams on Polar Express evenings unless you are riding the train; Flagstaff or Tusayan will usually have more choice.
  • On a road trip: coming from Las Vegas or Phoenix changes which base is on your way.
