Kingman sits where US-93 from Las Vegas meets I-40, and where the old Route 66 splits into its two best-known Arizona stretches: west over Sitgreaves Pass to Oatman, and east through Hackberry towards Seligman. That makes it a practical overnight stop rather than a destination in itself. This guide compares the three Kingman places in our guide, explains which part of town each one sits in, and gives the drive times that decide whether a night here makes sense.
Distances, drive times, opening hours and prices come from the sources listed at the end, as of October 2026. Guest scores are from Booking.com, checked on 16 October 2026.
The short answer
- Best value near the sights: Arizona Inn, on West Beale Street, about 0.3 miles (0.5 km) in a straight line from the Route 66 museum. 8.2 on Booking.com from 2,174 reviews (checked 16 Oct 2026).
- Highest score and most facilities: Best Western Plus A Wayfarer's Inn & Suites, at the east end of Andy Devine Avenue near the interstate. 8.6 on Booking.com from 1,754 reviews (checked 16 Oct 2026), with breakfast and a seasonal pool.
- Cheapest bed on the old road: Ramblin Rose Motel, on East Andy Devine Avenue. 7.5 on Booking.com from 1,012 reviews (checked 16 Oct 2026); simple rooms, good staff and value scores.
- Why stop at all: Kingman is roughly halfway between Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon's South Rim, and it is the last big town with fuel before both old Route 66 stretches.
Why people stop in Kingman
It splits the Las Vegas–Grand Canyon drive. AAA puts Las Vegas to Kingman at 119.2 miles (192 km), about 2 hours 19 minutes, and Kingman to Grand Canyon National Park at 173.2 miles (279 km), about 2 hours 53 minutes, via I-40 to Williams and AZ-64 north. If you leave Las Vegas in the afternoon, or stop at Hoover Dam on the way, a night in Kingman means you reach the rim the next morning with a full day ahead. Our guide to driving from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon covers the whole route and the dam visit.
The Route 66 museum and visitor centre. Both are in the Powerhouse, a former power station built between 1907 and 1911, at 120 West Andy Devine Avenue. According to Explore Kingman, the visitor centre is free and open daily from 8:00 to 17:00, closed on most major holidays. The Arizona Route 66 Museum charges $10 for adults and $6 for seniors (last entry 16:30), with children 12 and under free with a paying adult, as of October 2026. Its exhibits were renovated for the centenary and completed in November 2025.
Oatman and Sitgreaves Pass, to the west. West of Kingman, the old road climbs over the Black Mountains to Oatman, a former mining town where burros walk the main street. The Bureau of Land Management describes it as a two-lane paved road with hairpin curves and steep grades, posted at 20 to 45 mph, and there is a limit of 40 ft (12 m) on vehicle length over Sitgreaves Pass. In practice, large motorhomes and long trailers should not take it; even shorter RVs need care on the narrow bends. There is no water and there are no toilets along the way, and fuel is only in Kingman, Golden Valley, Bullhead City and Fort Mohave. AARoads puts Oatman about 22 miles (35 km) from where the old road leaves I-40 west of Kingman. Allow half a day for the round trip with time in Oatman.
Hackberry and the long stretch east. East of town, State Route 66 leaves the interstate for the longest surviving piece of the original highway in Arizona, which ADOT maintains between Kingman and Seligman. The Hackberry General Store, about 28 miles (45 km) northeast of Kingman, is the usual first stop, with vintage cars and Route 66 memorabilia. AAA puts Kingman to Williams on the old road at 131.5 miles (212 km), about 2 hours 25 minutes without stops. Our Route 66 road trip across Arizona follows it all the way to Holbrook.

Where the hotels are
Kingman spreads along two roads. Beale Street is the historic downtown, a short walk from the Powerhouse. Andy Devine Avenue is Route 66 itself, running from downtown north-east past a long line of motels, petrol stations and diners to the interstate interchange at the east end of town. Pick downtown to walk in the evening, the east end for a fast start in the morning.
Downtown, Beale Street: Arizona Inn
Arizona Inn is a motel at 411 West Beale Street, about 0.3 miles (0.5 km) in a straight line from the Route 66 museum. It scores 8.2 on Booking.com from 2,174 reviews (checked 16 Oct 2026). The sub-scores are even across the board: 8.8 for location and for value for money, 8.7 for staff, and 8.6 for cleanliness and comfort. Wi-Fi is its weakest point at 7.8.
It suits travellers who want to park once and walk to the museum and downtown restaurants. It is a price tier 2 motel, at around €68 a night for two in mid-January 2027 when we checked; prices change with the season and events. Rooms have a king bed or two queens, and there are family rooms.
Things to know: the hotel lists a minimum check-in age of 21, cards only (no cash), no pets, and no cots or extra beds. Children from 4 years are charged as adults. Check-in runs from 14:00 to 23:30.
Route 66, East Andy Devine Avenue: Ramblin Rose Motel
Ramblin Rose Motel, at 1001 East Andy Devine Avenue, is right on the old road, about 0.9 miles (1.4 km) in a straight line from the museum. It scores 7.5 on Booking.com from 1,012 reviews (checked 16 Oct 2026). The score breakdown explains the gap: staff (8.6), value for money (8.5) and Wi-Fi (9.1) rate well, while facilities (7.4), comfort (7.8) and cleanliness (7.9) are lower.
It is the budget pick, tier 1, around €58 a night for two in mid-January 2027 when we checked. Choose it if you want a cheap, simple room on Route 66 for one night and do not need a pool or breakfast. There is a 24-hour front desk, which helps if you arrive late from Las Vegas.
Things to know: minimum check-in age 21, cards only, no pets, no cots or extra beds, and children from 6 are charged as adults.
East end, near I-40: Best Western Plus A Wayfarer's Inn & Suites
Best Western Plus A Wayfarer's Inn & Suites is at 2815 East Andy Devine Avenue, still on Route 66 but out by the interstate, about 2.7 miles (4.4 km) in a straight line from the museum. It has the highest score of the three: 8.6 on Booking.com from 1,754 reviews (checked 16 Oct 2026), with 9.1 for staff, 9.0 for comfort and 9.7 for Wi-Fi.
It is the most complete option: free breakfast, a seasonal outdoor pool, a hot tub, a fitness room, guest laundry, suites with up to three queen beds, and accessible rooms including a roll-in shower. Pets are allowed (charges may apply), and cots are free for children up to 6. It is a tier 3 hotel, around €130 a night for two in mid-January 2027 when we checked.
It suits families, travellers with a dog, and anyone who wants a quick start on I-40 east towards the Grand Canyon. The trade-off is that you will drive, not walk, to downtown.

Kingman or Seligman
If you are driving the old road east, Seligman, about an hour further on I-40, is the alternative. It is much smaller, with a short main street of motels and diners. The Aztec Motel & Creative Space scores 9.2 on Booking.com from 626 reviews (checked 16 Oct 2026), although it showed no rooms on Booking.com for our January dates. Deluxe Inn, in the middle of the strip, scores 7.8 on Booking.com from 380 reviews (checked 16 Oct 2026) and was around €79 a night for two in mid-January 2027 when we checked. Sleeping in Seligman puts you about 1 hour 45 minutes from the South Rim, but Kingman has more choice and more services if you arrive late. For more motels along the road, see the best Route 66 motels.
Before you book
- Events: the Route 66 UltraRun passes through Seligman, Kingman and Topock on 13–16 November 2026, and US 66 turns 100 on 11 November 2026. Expect fuller motels and higher prices around those dates.
- Weather: Kingman is lower and warmer than Williams or Flagstaff. Summer days are hot, which matters for the Oatman drive.
- Grand Canyon fees: since January 2026, visitors who are not US residents pay an extra fee at the park. See Grand Canyon entrance fees in 2026.
- Next nights: for the canyon itself, compare Tusayan, Williams or Flagstaff and our guide to where to stay in Williams, or see all areas in where to stay for the Grand Canyon and Route 66.
